Intro:
Brassavola nodosa is a popular species which is also known as the "Lady of the Night" orchid. The reason: the flowers are only fragrant at night because in nature they attract moths as a pollinator. This plant is native to Mexico, Central America, Venezuela and Peru. Brassavola nodosa has flowers that last for one to two months and this orchid can bloom a couple of times per year.

Light:
This plant requires medium to high light, from 2,500 to 5,000 footcandles. When growing under a windowsill, an east or southern exposure is best. These plants can also be placed about 6" under fluorescent bulbs.

Temperature:
This plant prefers intermediate to warm temperatures with winter daytime temps 75 to 85 degrees, Fahrenheit. Winter night temperatures should not fall below 62 degrees, Fahrenheit. Summer temperatures can be 10 degrees warmer.

Humidity:
50% or higher is ideal.

Water:
It is best to use rainwater, distilled or reverse osmosis water. Municipal water with a pH of 7.5 or lower can also be used. Water as the mix approaches dryness.

Fertilizer:
We highly recommend Green Jungle Orchid Food, especially formulated to work with rain, distilled, reverse osmosis water or water low in alkalinity. Fertilize with Green Jungle every time you water.

Or, use GrowMore 20-10-20 Ureafree for municipal or well water. Use at the rate of ½ teaspoon per gallon. If using GrowMore with rain, distilled, or reverse osmosis water, add back in 5 - 10% municipal or well water to supply the necessary calcium and magnesium. Fertilize every other watering in the summer and every third watering in the winter.

Flowering:
This plant has the potential to bloom several times a year. The flowers are very fragrant at night and long- lived. The petals vary from a pale green or yellowish color to almost pure white. The lip is a tubular spade shape that is white, sometimes with purple spots inside.

Repotting:
Repot this plant about once a year to year-and-a-half after it has bloomed, in a clay pot with a standard orchid bark mixture. You may also mount this plant onto a cork slab.
