Intro:
Lycaste skinneri is native to Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras. This plant is known for its beautiful lavender/pink flowers and sweet fragrance.

Light:
Low to medium light, 800-1500 foot-candles. The delicate foliage will burn if exposed to direct light.

Temperature:
Ideal temperatures are 60 degrees F. at night and mid to high 70's during the day. They will tolerate temperatures down to the mid 50's during winter and up into the 90's in summer as long as the humidity and air movement are high.

Humidity:
Because of its thin leaves, this plant requires humidity of 50-75% with good air movement. Constant air movement and humidity are the keys to growing a large and healthy Lycaste.

Water:
Use rain, reverse osmosis, or water with low mineral content. Keep moist during the summer when the plants are in active growth. During winter, late November to late January, water less often.

Fertilizer:
Use GrowMore 20-10-20 Ureafree for municipal or well water. Use at the rate of ½ teaspoon per gallon. If using rain, distilled, or reverse osmosis water, add back in 5 - 10% municipal or well water to supply the necessary calcium and magnesium. Fertilize every other watering in the summer and every third watering in the winter.

We also highly recommend Green Jungle Orchid Food, especially formulated to work with rain, distilled, reverse osmosis water or water low in alkalinity. Fertilize with Green Jungle every time you water.

Flowering:
Blooms are produced from the base of mature pseudobulbs and usually appear singly (but often in large numbers on mature specimens.) This plant generally blooms in the fall to winter months. Large plants can bloom any time when the nights are cool. Generally, summer time is the growing season for Lycastes. The flowers also have a sweet fragrance.

Repotting:
Repot when new growth begins to emerge. We have had great success potting these in coco husk mixed with coco peat, sponge rock and charcoal. Any good water retaining mix should do fine as long as the air movement is good.
