Intro:
Ansellia africana 'Garden Party' is the unusual all yellow form of the species native throughout the African continent. This orchid is easy to grow and flower as long as you have ample light. The flowers are long lasting and fragrant. As the plant gets older multiple sprays are produced year after year on upright canes. Another nice thing about this particular variety is that it stays more compact than the spotted forms.

Light:
This plant prefers medium to high light from 2,500 to 5,000 foot candles. A south exposure is best during winter months if you live in the northern hemisphere. High Pressure sodium fixtures are the best source of artificial light for this plant. Keep the plant in bright light during winter months to ensure good flower production for the spring and summer months.

P.L. Lights systems are a great way to provide artificial light to your orchids. See our P.L. Lights page for more information on this great product we offer.

Temperature:
This plant prefers intermediate to warm temperatures with daytime highs being from 70 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Winter night time lows should be from 58 to 64. Summer temps can be a few degrees warmer.

Humidity:
50% or higher is ideal. These plants love humidity in the summer months but will tolerate drier are in the winter. The use of humidity trays or humidifiers is very beneficial.

We offer two products that can help increase humidity levels. The humidity tray offered in black or white, and the Mist Maker. Please click on the underlined text for more information on these products.

Water:
It is best to use rainwater, distilled or reverse osmosis water. Municipal water with a pH of 7.5 or lower can also be used. Water as the mix approaches dryness but do not allow the mix to become completely dry between watering particularly when the plant is actively growing or flowering. This plant can tolerate drier conditions at the roots during wnter. Keep an eye on the tall canes and if they begin to shrivel water more frequently.

Over watering can cause several problems such as root rot and infectious bacteria/fungus in the potting medium. One product we offer that can help these problems if caught at an early stage is Phyton 27 bactericide and fungicide.

Fertilizer:
We highly recommend Green Jungle Orchid Food, especially formulated to work with rain, distilled, reverse osmosis water or water low in alkalinity. Fertilize with Green Jungle every time you water.

Or, use GrowMore 20-10-20 Ureafree for municipal or well water. Use at the rate of ½ teaspoon per gallon. If using rain, distilled, or reverse osmosis water, add back in 5 - 10% municipal or well water to supply the necessary calcium and magnesium. Fertilize every other watering in the summer and every third watering in the winter.

Flowering:
This plant typically flowers in the spring to summer months with sprays of one inch clear yellow flowers that last for two to three months. There is a very nice fragrance that is reminiscent of walking through a forest in the spring. As the plant matures multiple branching sprays are produced.

Repotting:
Repot this plant just after flowering when the new growths are emerging at the base. Keep somewhat drier at the roots for the first month after repotting. Use a medium grade bark mix and clay pots for best results.

We offer several different types of potting medium. Here are direct links to what we believe to be some of the best potting mediums available for orchids: Orchids Limited bark mix, New Zealand sphagnum moss, coco husk, coco peat, sponge rock, charcoal, tree fern fiber, osmunda fiber and cork slabs for epiphytic plants.
