Wide spectrum LED Grow Lights are suitable for orchids and other plants. This is new technology not available until now. The 38 and 60 diode lamps are very bright and tend to have a very slight blue cast. With the 60 diode lamp, a distance of 3 to 5 foot between bulb and plant is ideal; with the 38 diode, 2 to 3 feet. The diode lamps are the most efficient at converting energy to light, being in the mid to high 90 percent range. The 60 diode light at 2 feet above the plants, covers an area of an 18-inch diameter circle; at 3 feet above, coverage is 20 inches; 4 feet, 26 inches and 5 feet, 30 inches. The chip tech light has a bit warmer, more natural color rendering and a wider coverage than the 38 and 60 diode lamps. It is ideal for mounting at 18 inches to 3 feet from the plants. The light dispersal for the chip tech light is as follows: 12" above the plants, 24" coverage; 18" above the plants, 36" coverage; 2' above, 45" coverage; 3' above, 60" coverage. Three of the chip tech lights will replace a 4-foot fluorescent 2-bulb setup and exceed the performance. All of these bulbs use about 4 watts of energy. The manufacturer suggests that they will last 100,000 hours! If used 12 hours/day, that is 22.83 years. Being that these are so new, we estimate a 7-year life or 30,000 hours. The savings in energy alone will pay for these lights very quickly. They can be mounted using a standard track system or any normal screw-in socket. Foot-candle measurements are not accurate for these bulbs due to the way the light is emitted and the wavelengths given off by the bulbs. Unlike fluorescent bulbs, very distinct shadows can be seen just by holding your hand above the foliage.
