Cypripedium candidum
Cypripedium candidum
Base Price:
$55.00
Intro:
A petite terrestrial with slightly fragrant flowers and a white pouch. Cypripedium candidum is a perfect perennial addition to shade gardens in zone
Light:
These plants can take full sun in the morning hours and need to be shaded after noon to avoid sun burn. When planted outside, an east exposure or a bright northern exposure are ideal. A well-shaded southern or western exposure is also possible.
Temperature:
These plants can survive in zones 3 to 5, and northern zone 6. Some collectors will grow these indoors and give them an artificial winter by putting them in the fridge for 16 weeks after the foliage has turned brown and they go dormant.
Humidity:
50% or higher is ideal.
Water:
This plant needs the soil to be moist at all times. Planting in bog-like conditions is best. Amend the soil (black dirt) with a mixture of peat moss and silica sand, or coco-peak mixed with 30% perlite and 20% sand. This plant can be grown in the mixes listed about without black dirt as well.
Fertilizer:
We highly recommend
Green Jungle Orchid Food
, especially formulated to work with rain, distilled, reverse osmosis water or water low in alkalinity. Fertilize with Green Jungle every third or fourth week during the summer and after green-up. Use at the rate of 1 oz.(2 tbsp)per gallon of water.
Flowering:
Petite flowers with brown petals and dorsal sepal, and a white pouch make for great contrast. These plants generally bloom in May to June.
Repotting:
None necessary if grown outdoors in the ground. In the case of using an artificial bog, changing the soil once every 5 to 6 years can be beneficial. For those growing in pots, the pot size should increase each year as the root system gets larger. Cyps do well when they have plenty of room for the roots to grow horizontally.
