Intro: Cymbidium erythrostylum is native to Vietnam. It is a warmer growing cymbidium of compact size that is easy to grow and bloom. It will do well in intermediate to warmer conditions. The flowers are large, up to 4", colored in glistening white. The petals sweep forward over the lip, and there is a nice fragrance to the flower as well.
Light: This plant prefers medium light, as for cattleyas. East or west windows(if not in direct sun) are acceptable, as is fluorescent lighting if no more than 6" above the foliage. If in greenhouses, keep shady.
Temperature: Intermediate temperatures are ideal, with night temperatures between 60 and 63 degrees, and daytime temperatures of 70 to 75 degrees or above.
Humidity: 50% or higher is best.
Water: Water as the plant approaches dryness, but do not ever allow the plant to become bone dry at the roots between watering. Cymbidiums grow on rotted logs in nature, and therefore the roots are always moist. It is important to rinse the leaves off on a weekly basis to prevent spider mites from gaining hold. Cymbidiums are susceptible to spider mites, and this will help prevent them from getting started. It is important to water this plant in the morning so the foliage and leaf axles are dry by nightfall. Rain water or municipal is acceptable if the pH is below 7.7.
Fertilizer: We highly recommend using Green Jungle Orchid Food, especially formulated to work with rain, distilled, reverse osmosis water or water low in alkalinity. Fertilize with Green Jungle every time you water if plants are planted in bark. Be sure to flush the mix with clear water only once per month to prevent fertilizer salt build up. For plants in moss or mounted on slabs feed every third or 4th watering as the moss holds a lot of nutrients.
Or use
GrowMore 20-10-20 Ureafree for municipal or well water. Use at the rate of ½ teaspoon per gallon. If using GrowMore with rain, distilled, or reverse osmosis water, add back in 5 - 10% municipal or well water to supply the necessary calcium and magnesium. Fertilize every other watering in the summer and every third watering in the winter.
Another fertilizer offered is: GrowMore 6-30-30 (Cymbidium and bloom boosting formula).
Flowering: This plant typically flowers in the fall months, and can flower from August through October. The plants do not reach a large size, as the leaves are only about 16" long. They are blooming size in a 5" pot. When you see the spikes emerge from the base of the plant, it is important to keep it more evenly moist.
Repotting: It is best to repot in the spring when new growths are forming. The roots are very large and fleshy. If you find your pot is totally taken over with roots, with very little bark mix left, repot into a larger pot without breaking into the root system.
