A Rare and Beautiful Species from Madagascar
This extraordinary plant from Madagascar is prized for its unusually large, 4-inch flowers, especially impressive given its compact size. Despite its exotic origins and seemingly challenging habitat, we've found it to be fairly easy to grow in New Zealand sphagnum moss. It's fine, hair-covered roots are a clear sign of its love for moisture, though we recommend allowing the moss to nearly dry out between waterings. In the wild, these plants grow at a higher elevation and are used to bright light. So, cool to intermediate and bright light will give optimal results.
It adapts well to a broad range of temperatures and typically blooms from winter through early spring. The bronze-toned sepals and petals create a striking display, and the flowers are both long-lasting and fragrant at night. At maturity, the plant maintains a modest leaf span of about 6 inches.
Available as seedlings in 2025. These are estimated to be 2–3 years from blooming.
