Description
A remarkable species native to Thailand, Malaysia, Borneo, Sumatra, and the Lesser Sunda Islands, Bulbophyllum medusae is named for its extraordinary flower clusters that resemble the flowing, serpent-like hair of Medusa from Greek mythology. Each inflorescence produces a pom-pom of long, thin, dangling petals, creating one of the most striking displays in the genus.
This is a warm-to intermediate-growing orchid that thrives in high humidity and good air movement. We grow ours best in New Zealand sphagnum moss in pots, which helps maintain consistent moisture around the roots. In very humid environments, such as South Florida, this species also performs well mounted on cork slabs or even on trees, mimicking its natural epiphytic habit.
Blooms are typically produced in late summer to fall, and while each flower is short-lived, the overall display is spectacular.
A must-have for any Bulbophyllum enthusiast or grower looking to add a truly unique and conversation-starting orchid to their collection!
