Description
Native to the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil, this unique species is a natural tetraploid with 80 chromosome. The flowers are large for the type species with 2-inch or larger flowers colored in a brilliant yellow. This plant grows on granite in nature but the plants can always be found growing in leaf litter or in crevices that have a peat-like substance. Contrary to what one may think these plants like moisture at the roots. Where they grow in nature there are often heavy fogs at night that run down the rocks and into the crevices. This plant grows in areas where the temps can be cool at night but up to 90 Fahrenheit in the day time. The roots are always in a slightly moist collection of detritus that holds water but has good aeration. Water this plant when the potting mix just dries between watering. When in flower or developing flower spikes water as the potting media approaches dryness. The plants we are offering are selected divisions from our breeding stock. The particular strains we have of these are extra large in terms of plant size. These are really stunning!
