Description
Note: this species is known to have a yellow hue in the foliage. The plants have been tested and are virus-free. Current stock has a mixture of open flowers and buds as of 2/20. Flower buds emerge from the newest growths before they mature. This particular clone was purchased from Herman Pigors from Oak Hill Gardens in Illinois during the 1980's.
Native to Brazil & Bolivia, this unique Laelia is the only two-leafed species in the region. Compact at about 8 inches tall, in nature it can be found growing either as an epiphyte on tree trunks or as a lithophyte on rock. When new growths appear there are nearly always 2-3 new ones coming from the prior years growth.
Care Tips:
- Water when the potting mix is nearly dry. Keep somewhat drier at the roots in winter months. - Prefers clay or plastic pots with New Zealand sphagnum moss or tree fern media. - Blooms mid-winter to early spring with fragrant, 1-inch flowers lasting 3–4 weeks.
Blooming Habit:
Flower spikes resemble new leaf growth. Buds emerge as new growths reach 1–2 inches, with flowers appearing on the newest growths, similar to walkeriana. The last photo is representative of the 2 sizes available
