Description
Dendrobium moniliforme is a miniature to small-sized epiphytic orchid native to Japan, China, Korea, and parts of the Himalayas. It has slender, cane-like stems that resemble beads strung together—hence the name moniliforme ("necklace-shaped"). The plant produces fragrant, short-lived flowers in shades of white, pink, or pale purple, typically blooming in spring. Widely prized in Japanese horticulture and often grown on mounts or in shallow pots, it thrives in bright light, good air movement, and distinct seasonal temperature changes, including a drier winter rest to encourage flowering.
For production growing, unglazed clay pots with sphagnum moss work very well. To encourage reliable flowering, reduce watering and withhold fertilizer in early winter while keeping temperatures lower. These plants can tolerate temperatures down to the upper 30s if the potting mix is dry, but will still flower well with evening lows in the high 50s to low 60s. Before blooming, the foliage will drop as the canes prepare to produce buds. Normal watering should not resume until buds are well developed. While plants will still grow and may occasionally bloom without a winter rest, providing a proper dry rest significantly improves flower production.
The current batch has just been repotted into 2.25" pots with sphagnum moss as of September 2025, and all are blooming size!
We are also offering them pre-moss-mounded in our K20 3D-printed Dendrobium Onami Pot and Royal Kiku (White)!
