Description
Tradescantia zebrina is native to Mexico, Central America and Colombia. It can also be found in Belize to El Salvador and Panama, as well as on the Caribbean islands.
This is a popular vine that is often used in arrangements, grown in hanging baskets, and in terrarium settings. It makes very good ground cover and can be used in landscaping in tropical environments (it can handle temperatures down to 54 degrees F).
This plant is extremely easy to grow, and it grows quite fast. We sell 8" cuttings as they tend to establish better from shorter cuttings. You can plant them directly into a peat mix, sphagnum moss, coconut peat or even just place them in a vase with water to root them. In water, they have been known to grow up to one inch of roots per day! This plant makes for great decor, and we have had it in our nursery since the 1980's. Once in a while it will produce small purple flowers. When grown in low light, the leaves will have a silver sheen to them with an innate and marginal band of purple. When grown in medium to bright light, the leaves will be predominately purple in color.
We will ship the cuttings in a plastic zip lock bag with a wet paper towel.
