Description
'Ogonmaru' means gold in Japanese. These are actually considered hybrids with an unknown history of breeding. Because they resemble the species so much, it is most likely the result of 'back-crossing', which is when a species is used again with a hybrid to intensify the species characteristics. Interestingly, no other similar Neofinetia hybrid can produce the wonderful sweet fragrance the Ogomaru (and Kibana) have. They grow exactly the same as the species but sometimes can bloom off-season, or more than once per year. This plant also has dark purple flecking in the foliage which is a characteristic of Ascocentrum.
