Talk about a statement piece! This spectacular Southeast Asian species produces 3-foot-tall spikes that can host 75 to 100 (or more!) sweetly fragrant flowers, each up to 3 inches across. Even more impressive—they can bloom for over three months!
When in spike, water heavily, as these plants are extremely thirsty. You may even need to water more than once a week. Check the sphagnum moss mid-week; if it feels dry, it’s time to water again. We recommend allowing the moss to dry slightly between waterings. The core of the plant is a root ball growing around a bark mix.
We’ve seen these orchids mounted and growing directly on trees in both Hawaii and South Florida. It’s one of the few orchids that can acclimate to full sun if needed. These bright-light-loving plants thrive in well-lit rooms, and during the darker months, they’ll need grow lights to continue progressing toward the next blooming season.
This particular plant is a cross between the spotted leopard variety and the pure green variety. Based on that lineage, we expect flowers similar to those in the first photo, possibly with more green.
