This an amazing species from Machu Picchu Peru, often referred to as the 'Gallo-Gallo' which means rooster (because of their red combs). The flowers on all veitchianas have iridescent purple hairs that color shift when turned from side to side in the light. This species prefers good humidity and low to medium light with cool yo intermediate temperatures. The coastal areas in California and indoors in the Pacific Northwest seem to be one of the best spots in the USA to grow this plant with little trouble. When conditions are just right, this plant will flower off and on, all year round. The 4-5 inch flowers last for about 5-6 weeks or more.
