Description
Known as "The Giant Vandopsis," this division comes from a plant originally imported by Jerry Fischer (founder of Orchids Limited) in our first year of business, 1978, from the renowned Bangkrabue Nursery of Thailand, which held a royal warrant from the King of Thailand as a collector for the Royal Family.

The flowers of this remarkable species have incredible substance, carry a fresh green-banana fragrance, and last an impressive 2–3 months in bloom. Native to Southeast Asia, Vandopsis thrives in climates with heavy summer rainfall followed by a seasonal dry period (late November through mid-January).

In nature, these orchids grow in open grassy areas with full sun to light shade, producing prop roots that both prevent rot during monsoon rains and anchor the plant against strong winds. For cultivation, grow warm to hot with semi-shaded light and a well-draining medium. Water and fertilize generously during the growing season. Many growers use baskets with large chunks of charcoal or clay balls; in humid climates with daily watering, they can also be grown in open baskets.

This is a truly spectacular orchid for any Vandaceous collection. Because plants can take decades to reach flowering size from seed, divisions are highly prized. Vandopsis is also excellent for breeding, especially with Rhynchostylis gigantea, producing hybrids of exceptional beauty. Best results are achieved in straight charcoal or clay balls such as Hydroton.
