Description

Note: These plants have a fast growth season, typically starting in April/May and ending in August/September. Note that if you purchase in August, the foliage will start to turn yellow and go dormant very soon afterwards.

An excellent houseplant for the unique plant collector! Commonly known as the “Voodoo Lily,” Amorphophallus konjac is an unusual and easy-to-grow aroid that can develop a leaf span of up to 3.5 feet. Over time, the corm produces multiple offsets, forming new “pup” growths and gradually creating a larger clump.

Each spring, the plant sends up a single large leaf that grows throughout the warm season, feeding the corm before naturally going dormant for several months. After years of this cycle, mature corms can produce a spectacular flower reaching up to 5 feet tall. The bloom emits a strong odor of rotting meat to attract its natural pollinators: flies and carrion beetles.

These plants generally reach blooming size once the corm is approximately baseball-sized. Once mature, they tend to flower every 2–3 years between foliage cycles. Warm growing conditions can accelerate growth and flowering frequency, making the Southern USA an ideal climate for outdoor summer culture.

They appreciate frequent watering and fertilizer during active growth in summer.

Fun fact: In Japan, the corm is processed into a gelatinous food product known as “konnyaku,” commonly used for noodles and dietary foods because it is very low in calories and high in fiber. These products are now widely available in many U.S. supermarkets as well.

Plant Sizes Available:

  • 5" Pot — Mid-sized plants, estimated to be roughly 2 years from blooming size.
