Description
This superb terrestrial species from East Africa is named after Walter Rothschild(1868-1937) of Tring Park, England, who was a devoted naturalist and, at a very young age, had a menagerie of wildlife in his home that eventually led to what is known now as the Tring Park Natural History Museum. This orchid produces two elegant leaves atop each of its Hershey Kiss-shaped pseudobulbs. Before blooming or shortly afterward, the foliage will turn yellow and shed, leaving just the pseudobulbs and flower spikes. When they emerge, the large, 3-inch wide flowers last several weeks. You'll have to smell it to believe it, but these flowers produce citrus tones with the scent of fresh (not rotting) fish. It's not unpleasant, but it is a curious scent.

This species should be watered while actively growing or flowering when the medium is lightly damp. During dormancy, allow the medium to dry entirely between waterings. New leafy growths emerge in spring after blooming. Note that it is normal for plants to sometimes lose all the foliage while flowering.
