Angraecum sesquipedale (Darwin's Orchid)

The famous Madagascan Darwin orchid, renowned for its large white flowers accented by remarkable 12-inch nectary spurs! Darwin famously predicted that its pollinator would be a moth with an equally long proboscis, and years later, he was proven correct. The flowers are nocturnally fragrant, releasing their scent in the evening when moths are active.

This species typically blooms from late December to early January, producing heavy, waxy flowers that last approximately 4 to 6 weeks. The blooms are strongly fragrant at night, with a scent reminiscent of a clean, fresh, almost “crisp” aroma. For best results, grow in intermediate to warm conditions with medium light, and allow the potting mix to nearly dry between waterings. Culturally, they grow very similarly to Phalaenopsis.

This is a fantastic addition to any orchid collection and a great choice for growers of all experience levels!

Notes:

This species has slightly sensitive roots, so when repotting, try to minimize root disturbance if possible (though this can be challenging once they become root-bound).

It is normal for some black spotting or yellow markings to appear on the foliage. While most of ours are quite clean, these markings may develop over time. Even our large specimen plants show them!
