Coryanthes bruchmuelleri var. flava

The magnificent Coryanthes bruchmuelleri is the largest-flowered species of all the Coryanthes, with blooms measuring about 8–10 inches in size. The flavum form is quite rare, being entirely yellow. We expect these to flower in the yellow form, though there is a possibility that some may display the typical reddish spots and markings.

This species is famous for its large, very fragrant, bucket-shaped flowers, which are specially adapted to temporarily trap Euglossine bees for pollination. We’ve linked a YouTube video for reference. Coryanthes bruchmuelleri is native to Venezuela, Colombia, Brazil, and Peru.

The flowers are short-lived, lasting only about 3–5 days. Larger plants can bloom more than once during the summer, and the entire process of watching the buds develop and open is truly unique.

These plants grow best in intermediate to warm, moist conditions and prefer to be fertilized every third or fourth watering. Limited availability.
