A truly wild-looking orchid from South America, producing unusual bucket-shaped flowers with an exceptionally strong fragrance. This species is native to Trinidad, French Guiana, Suriname, Guyana, Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, and Brazil, where it grows in lowland wet forests.
Coryanthes thrives under warm, moist conditions with frequent watering and generous fertilizing during active growth. The spectacular flowers are short-lived, lasting approximately three days, but watching the alien-like buds develop and open is part of the fun! Larger plants may bloom more than once during the spring and summer flowering season.
Both sizes offered are blooming-size plants and are expected to flower by spring or summer 2027 at the latest. As of September 2026, the plants have recently been repotted into baskets and solid pots. Unlike Stanhopea, that produce both surface and internal spikes, Coryanthes develops its spikes from the top of the plant and can bloom successfully without a basket.
