Commonly known as the Yellow Lady’s Slipper, this large-flowered form of Cypripedium is one of the easiest and hardiest species in the genus to grow. Native to North America, it is well suited for garden culture and rewards growers with charming blooms carrying a sweet honey-apricot fragrance. This plant is hardy, due to its widespread adaptation. Its overall native range stretches from Alaska and Yukon across Canada and much of the northern/eastern U.S., south to Georgia, Louisiana, Arizona, and New Mexico.
The plants we are offering were legally rescued, with permits, from wild populations in Minnesota. For growers in USDA Hardiness Zones 2 through 7a, we recommend planting outdoors directly in the ground. The location can have full morning sun, with a shaded afternoon.
Cypripedium are moisture-loving orchids, so the root system should remain evenly moist and never dry completely. Sprinkler systems work well, along with frequent hand watering. In addition, the soil can be a combination of black dirt, sand, and peat moss or coco coir. As winter approaches, mulch plants with 3" to 5" of leaf litter, such as dry oak leaves, after the first frost. Once the growing season ends, plants naturally turn brown between August and October as they enter winter dormancy.
The last photo shows the growth stages as of 4/26. We expect most to mature and flower within early to mid May.
Please Note: We cannot guarantee flowers on every plant. These are mature plants, however, and if a plant skips the current blooming season, it is highly likely to flower the following season. Once established and settled into their new environment, they typically perform very well.
