Description

A robust, semi-deciduous epiphytic orchid species native to the subtropical biome spanning from the Himalayas through South China and Indo-China.

The older foliage will typically shed during the dry rest season in the winter to early spring. They typically defoliate after they have flowered, while new growths host the new foliage until the next bloom season.

This particular batch came to us with dry foliage tips, which we have removed. It may be a trait of this species, or simply they way they were grown previously. They are well-established plants with new growths forming.

Cultivation and Care:

  • Light: Requires strong, indirect sunlight or partial shade. Bright light is crucial during spring and summer to develop strong canes, though it must be shielded from harsh midday exposure.

  • Temperature: Highly adaptable, thriving in cool to warm conditions. It benefits from summer temperatures between 20–28°C (68–82°F) and a cooler winter drop down to 8–15°C (46–59°F) at night to initiate buds.

  • Watering:

    • Growing Season (Spring/Summer): Water generously to keep the potting medium consistently moist but never waterlogged.

    • Winter Rest Period: Significantly reduce watering, stop all fertilizer, and allow the substrate to dry out fully between light mistings. A cooler, drier period is vital to promote a heavy spring to summer bloom.

  • Potting Substrate: Plastic or clay pots. Use a small to coarse, free-draining media mix consisting of medium-grade bark, charcoal, and perlite.
