A very unique species from Borneo. This is an individual listing, and the last photo shown is the actual plant you will receive. It has now reached blooming size.
The flowers of Dimorphorchis lowii are among the most unusual in the orchid world, offering a display that feels almost otherworldly.
This species produces two types of flowers on the same spike, a rare trait that gives it its name (“dimorphic” meaning two forms). These are specified as 'basal' or 'distal' flowers. Basal flowers are yellow and have fragrance, while distal flowers are red, with no fragrance.
These plants average 10 to 12 years from seed to first bloom! The first bloom can also be unpredictable, as some plants flower at 18 inches tall, whereas we have had some not flower until they are 36 inches tall. Warmer temperatures are key to growing these plants faster, as they are used to hot, humid conditions in the wild.
