This Brazilian species is a charming summer bloomer, producing fragrant flowers with a distinctive black licorice scent. These plants are tetraploid (4N), resulting in flowers that are significantly larger, rounder, and heavier in substance than their diploid counterparts.
An easy species to grow, it adapts well to a range of temperatures, though it tends to flower best during the heat of summer. We currently grow our plants in bulb pans with sphagnum moss, but this species is also one of the easiest orchids to cultivate mounted on cork or tree fern slabs. It performs equally well in baskets, as the roots thrive with excellent air movement. If growing mounted, be sure to provide consistent moisture and good humidity.
Current plants are expected to flower late August.
