The Amami Island form is the largest of all Neofinetia and is considered a must-have for collectors. Native to Japan, Korea, and China, Neofinetia has a rich cultural history and occupies a unique place in orchid horticulture.
Unlike most other Neofinetia, the Amami Island form produces significantly larger foliage and flowers. Mature plants typically develop a leaf span of 8–12 inches across. The flowers are usually white but may also display a delicate pink blush. Their fragrance is exceptionally strong and reminiscent of jasmine, persisting around the clock and becoming even more intense during the evening. Very few orchids offer a fragrance that can be enjoyed 24 hours a day.
One of the most distinctive traits of the Amami Island form is its flowering habit. Large, multi-growth specimens have been known to bloom twice in a single year, producing flowers in both summer and fall. Even if your plant does not bloom by July, it may still flower later in the season, from September through November.
Current plants are established in bark and feature multiple mature, large growths, making them excellent blooming-size specimens.
