Description
Divisions of an Awarded Plant

This exceptional Paphiopedilum Maudiae clone has a rich history. Once owned by Mrs. Pierre du Pont in the 1940s, the plant was originally known as ‘Bankhaus’. It was later sold by Norris Powell of the now-defunct Orchid House in Los Osos, California, to a customer who entered it into competition under the name ‘The Queen’—a name under which it has received an impressive list of awards:

AM/AOS (Award of Merit, American Orchid Society)

AD/NSW (Award of Distinction, New South Wales Orchid Society)

SM/CSA (Silver Medal, Cymbidium Society of America)

AM/NSW (Award of Merit, New South Wales)

TRO/TOGA (Top Recognized Orchid, Taiwan Orchid Growers Association)

Interestingly, this plant was also awarded twice under the misspelled name ‘Bankhouse’, receiving both a CCC/AOS (Certificate of Cultural Commendation) and another AM/AOS.

This clone is widely considered to be among the finest—if not the finest—green and white Maudiae-type Paphiopedilums in existence. There is speculation that it is a triploid (3N), which would explain its exceptional vigor, flower size, and consistency.

Notably, the plant is capable of blooming twice per year or more, and its foliage is equally remarkable—dark olive-blue green with ghostly lighter mottling, adding ornamental value even when not in bloom.
The plant currently listed is an individual listing. Please refer to the last photo to see the exact plant for sale. Thank you!
