Description

This unique plant is also known as the Holy Ghost Orchid.

The rare and exquisite Peristeria elata is native to Panama, Venezuela, and Ecuador. Cherished for its elegant appearance and delightful fragrance, it is sometimes used as a cut flower in wedding bouquets in Panama. This striking orchid produces impressive 2 to 3-foot flower spikes, adorned with round, 1.5-inch, cup-shaped blooms featuring a perfectly shaped dove in the center, giving it its sacred name. The thick, waxy flowers are long-lasting and highly fragrant.

Growing Conditions & Care:

We grow this orchid in New Zealand sphagnum moss, mimicking its natural habitat. These plants thrive in warmth and humidity, producing their spectacular blooms in the heat of summer, typically in August. For the best results, maintain warm temperatures and consistent moisture at the roots.

Once the plant has reached blooming size, the pseudobulbs will be larger than a baseball! Note that black spots on older growths are normal, as the plant naturally sheds aging foliage.

*Note that Peristeria are known to have 'rough' looking foliage. Sometimes we remove the leaves before shipping if they are heavily spotted. The new growths emerge each year and are typically present in the summer months. In addition, they often develop spots on the pseudobulbs (see closeup photo). These do not affect the growth of the plant, but if they appear wet, we spray them with fungicide.
