Phrag. kovachii - mature plants

The largest-flowered species in the genus, Phragmipedium kovachii is native to northeastern Peru and was formally described in 2002, making it a relatively recent discovery. It is remarkable that a species with such enormous flowers remained unknown to botanists for so long.

We have a limited number of seldom-seen blooming-size plants available. Currently, we grow them in a bark-based mix and water frequently to keep the roots evenly moist. In the past, we successfully cultivated them in diatomaceous earth on ebb-and-flow benches, which proved to be an excellent method. However, since that material is no longer available to us, we have returned to a more traditional bark mix.

These plants are at blooming size and typically flower between November and March, although occasional off-season bloomers do occur.
