Description

This is a hybrid mix of Central and South American Psychopsis, commonly known as the "Butterfly Orchid" due to its unique and elegant flower shape. They also have attractive and thick, slightly mottled foliage.

Psychopsis orchids are best known for their ability to reflower on the same stem for multiple years, and some have been recorded doing so for over 10 years! Each flower lasts 3 to 4 weeks. Once a flower drops, it typically takes 1 to 4 weeks (sometimes longer) for another bud to develop and bloom. The warmer the conditions and the larger the plant, the faster a new flower will emerge. Occasionally, two flowers may open at the same time, although this is usually brief.

Another interesting feature of their flower spikes is their resilience, as if a spike is accidentally broken, you can leave the remaining section, as it may branch off from a node and produce a new side spike. Because a significant amount of energy is invested in producing flower spikes, it's not uncommon for the plant to have only one spike for 2 to 3 years before developing a second. Warmer temperatures promote faster development.

For best results, grow in a moist potting medium, in shaded conditions, with intermediate to warm temperatures.

Please note that Psychopsis may take up to 12 months to fully establish a new root system after import. However, we have not experienced any issues with plants from the last two imports. To encourage root development, monthly applications of a kelp fertilizer supplement are optional.

*Note: This batch had fungicide applied prior to importing them. The fungicide that was used left blackish spotting on the foliage that does not seem to go away. New foliage will develop green and not have this spotting.
