This is our exclusive line-bred strain of the supra “Lord Rothschild’s” variety of Vanda coerulea, a breeding program we began in 1978.

Native to northeastern India, Myanmar, Thailand, and southwestern China, this extraordinary species produces flowers that come remarkably close to true blue. Our tetraploid (4N) breeding has resulted in striking 4- to 6-inch blooms, with flowers increasing in size as the plants mature. Their rich ultramarine tones deepen after opening, and the blooms can last two to three months. Cooler temperatures and brighter light encourage the strongest coloration.

In the wild, Vanda coerulea grows at elevations of approximately 800 to 1,700 meters. This makes it tolerant of conditions ranging from cool to warm—unlike many large-flowered Vandas, which do not perform well in cooler temperatures.

Representing our eighth generation of breeding, these plants trace their lineage to stock originally imported from Bangkrabue Nursery in Thailand, whose renowned owner collected orchids for the King of Thailand.

Grow culture:
We have grown this species both in sphagnum moss and in bark mix, with great results from both. For basket culture, we recommend lining the baskets with Oregon green moss, and filling the inside of the basket with medium charcoal. This method only requires repotting once every several years.
