For the plant collector extraordinaire! This is one of the world's largest flowers, reaching up to 10 feet in height. This species is commonly known as the "giant corpse flower" for its putrid scent, meant to attract flies for pollination. We are offering progeny from a cross between our two giant parents, 'Audrey' and 'Little Shop of Horrors'. These young plants germinated in 2020 and, under ideal conditions, should bloom by 8 to 12 years of age. The warmer the growing conditions the better, as this is a lowland Southeast Asian plant from Sumatra. Most of these plants ship at about 8" to 12" tall.
The foundation of this plant is an underground corm that hosts a petiole with palm-like leaflets on top. After about a year of growth, the petiole and leaves turn yellow and decompose, leaving just the bare corm underground to sit dormant until a new growth is sent out. This process happens years on end until the corm is ready to host a single flower. When in bloom, the structure hosts hundreds of small flowers at the base, which have separate sections for male and female flowers. The female flowers only accept pollination the first day of blooming, while the second day is followed by the male flowers releasing pollen. Because of this almost no plants have ever self-pollinated. These plants can go dormant for up to two years after flowering, before sending out a new vegetative growth.
