Description
An orange flower variety from Japan. Producing more intense orange color requires covering the flower bud. See description below. These plants average 5 to 7 bulbs in a pot.
These plants are 'seasonal' growers, meaning they take cool temps, lower light and drier conditions in the winter and warm, bright, moist conditions in the summer (growing season). The goeringii generally flower in February or March.
Producing intense colors for red, yellow, orange purple
In the fall, goeringii will produce flower buds at the base of the plant. During this time the buds can be covered. The most unique technique used in Japan is to place a fine mesh screen around the surface of the pot that bows up from the rim to the center of the foliage. Then cover the mesh with a fine grit substance like coarse sand for about 1 month. After 1 month, remove and the buds should be larger but not pushing out of the medium. At this stage a paper or aluminum foil tube about 8" high is placed over the bud with the top closed to prevent light from coming through to the bud. Now the spike will develop in the tube, which can take up to 50 days. During this spike development time, the best temperature range is above freezing but below 50 degrees F. This technique is what the best growers use in Japan for maximum color, however, we have flowered some varieties without doing any of these steps. We do keep the plants below 70 and above 55 degrees in the particular greenhouse they grow in (winter time), and have mixed results in blossoms.
