The beautiful and subtly fragrant 'Nobile-type' Dendrobium comes from Southeast Asia and is easy to grow as it is tolerant of a wide range of temperatures from cool to hot. The name 'Nobile-type' comes from the origin parent, Dendrobium nobile, which influences the growth habit and flower shape of all of the offspring strongly. If you like orchids and have never tried growing this variety, you are in for a treat!
These orchids grow from spring until late fall, then stop and prepare to flower in the winter. During the late fall it is good to transition to cooler temperatures, watering less frequently and with no fertilizer in order to encourage blooming. Their canes are tall and usually require staking to keep them upright, as in nature they grow on the sides of trees with the canes drooping pendulously.
As these plants flower (or near the end of flowering) the canes that host the flowers will drop their leaves. The leaves turn yellow and often get black spots as they drop. This is completely normal, and once spring starts the new growths with fresh foliage will emerge from the base.
