Description
A true miniature butterwort, Pinguicula esseriana is native to the rocky limestone outcrops of Mexico.
This species is very easy to grow in a moisture-retentive but well-drained mixture. You can grow them by simply setting them on top of sphagnum moss in small pots. We have also used a fine mix with good drainage of perlite, peat moss, fine bits of sphagnum moss, and fine seedling bark. In nature, Pinguicula grow attached to rocky and mossy surfaces, producing shallow root systems.
Like other carnivorous plants, Pinguicula are efficient at catching tiny insects. They are particularly adept at controlling fungus gnats that often appear around orchids or houseplants.
The current batch are divisions from a wide leaf plant, as shown in the 3rd photo example. We have given this the clonal name 'chubby' due to its fat leaves!
