Description
This superb terrestrial species from East Africa is named after Walter Rothschild, a devoted naturalist of the mid to late 1800's. The natural History Museum at Tring, which Walter founded is fascinating place to visit. This orchid produces two elegant leaves atop each of its Hershey Kiss-shaped pseudobulbs. Prior to blooming or shortly afterwards the foliage will turn yellow and shed, leaving just the pseudobulbs and flower spikes. In the mid to late fall through January, the large, 3-inch wide flowers emerge, lasting several weeks. You'll have to smell it to believe it, but these flowers produce citrus tones with the scent of fresh (not rotting) fish. Not unpleasant, but and odd/curious scent.
While actively growing or flowering, this species should be watered when the media is lightly damp. During dormancy, allow the medium to dry entirely between waterings. New leafy growths emerge in spring post blooming.
We have a number of select clones we offer divisions of from time to time.
Specimen size plants put on an amazing display, making this a worth-while long-term collection plant!
