Description
A beautiful species native to Southeast Asia, in low elevation bamboo to pine forests. This plant is easy to grow and flower if its culture is understood. This plant requires New Zealand sphagnum moss or a well drained peat-based mix to do best. There are fairly good-sized tubers in the moss that store energy and allow the plant to grow and flower at the right cycle. In nature it has a dry rest. To properly grow at a window sill, keep the potting mix well watered and fertilize once per month when the plant has leaves and flowers. After flowering, the plant will lose its leaves and flower stem. At this point, only use clear water through the winter, allowing the moss to become dry between watering. Water the pot every 2-3 weeks thoroughly. In a house, this will keep the tubers hydrated but won't rot them. When new growth starts again and the leaves are developing, resume a more frequent watering and feeding schedule, allowing the moss to approach dryness between watering. This plant has beautiful leaves that are round in shape and the flower stem is about 12 to 16 inches tall with 8 to 12 flowers on average.
